Winter / Spring 2012
Dear Parents and Carrollton Community Residents,
You may have heard in news reports that the State of Michigan is raising the bar in test scores.
The biggest reason is the State’s goal is for more students to go to college and graduate. In 2004, Michigan ranked just above the national average in the percent of adults with bachelor’s degrees or higher. The government wants to change this.
College readiness means for students to succeed in first semester college without remediation. Career readiness means being ready to succeed in introductory technical / training courses without remediation. State Superintendent Mike Flanagan states, “We aren’t making the tests tougher….the bar is being raised.”
If a student is judged as “not proficient” in a subject, it means that student was not yet proficient at this “higher bar” on the day the test was given. It means the student has a ways to go to reach the mark, and we want to work with the student and parent to make this goal.
MEAP and the MME are just two tests that are given in Carrollton Public Schools. We have skilled teachers who have many other ways of assessing student achievement as the year moves along; it is important that parents work closely with teachers to see what is the best way for students to achieve their highest potential.
If you would like more information about the new scores, please contact your principal, email me at cdouglas@carrollton .k12.mi.us or call me at one of the numbers listed below, or visit the web (http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-22709---,00.html).
